Frequently Asked Questions
Signature K-9 Behavior &
Training
How old should my
puppy be to begin training?
Since puppies learn
every day, it is essential to begin training as early as possible. We
believe that 10 weeks is a good starting point for most puppies. This
allows the puppy to spend 2 to 3 weeks getting familiar with his new
home before formal training starts.
Should my
children be involved in the training?
Yes, depending on
their age and attention span. The big decision for parents is whether
to bring the children with them to training or to teach them at home
after they complete a lesson. Generally, children 9 and above may have
the attention span to be involved. However, a parent knows his/her
child best.
What type of
training methods do you use?
Our training methods
are based on research and are constantly being updated. We understand
both traditional and contemporary training approaches. We favor a
positive approach which is based upon classical and operant
conditioning as well as new ideas about the dog's ability to think. We
use food treats, praise, touch, voice, and other rewards of value to
the dog. We also custom design strategies to deal with dogs when they
do dangerous or annoying behavior. Methods and strategies are
discussed with owner/handlers as the training progresses.
How long are your
sessions?
Individual private
sessions for training or behavior modification can run as long as 2
hours, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, depending on the dog and
the situation. Group class sessions run approximately 1 hour.
Can my
dog learn obedience in only 3 private lessons?
During the time we
spend with you and your dog, we not only get your dog started on his
obedience career, we also teach you how to train your dog. We have
developed a protocol which includes building a relationship, setting
up a structure in your home, developing good manners, solving
problems, and establishing basic obedience.
The progress you and
your dog make is ultimately up to you and the time you spend with your
dog. Our group classes offer opportunity to continue training
refinement and to enjoy time with your dog. Many clients choose to
enter one of our 4 week group classes after they complete their
individual sessions. A number of clients continue coming to more and
more advanced classes because they enjoy seeing their dog progress and
they enjoy spending time with their dog.
Do you take dogs
and train them?
Although some
trainers do provide this service, we prefer to work firsthand with
dogs and their owners. This approach helps insure that you develop the
leadership skills, and structure that makes training a positive tool
for relationship building.
Where are you
located?
We are located 3
miles south of State Route 224 on State Route 44, in NE Ohio. We are
approximately half way between Louisville, Ohio and Ravenna Ohio. We
are easy access from major state and federal highways. Our clients
come from all over NE Ohio. Many believe we are worth the drive.
How old is too
old for a dog to be trained?
Your dog is never
too old to be trained. Since our methods work on the way the dog gets
rewarded in his life, we can always find new ways to teach the dog.
My Dog is
becoming aggressive, is there any hope?
Yes, most dogs can
be helped if their owners are serious and willing to work on the
problem.
Do you housetrain
puppies?
Teaching your dog
where to go to the bathroom is part of an overall structure for living
as a family partner. We include housetraining guidelines, suggestions,
and problem solving as part of our Puppy and Young Dog Program.
Our
family has changed;
So has my dog's behavior, can
anything be done?
When a dogs family
changes, so does the dog's structure for life. Sometimes this causes a
dog to offer undesirable or confusing behaviors. Usually, these
behaviors can be changed with specific training and management
strategies.
I have
several dogs;
How do I manage their
relationship?
To work
with multiple dogs, it is necessary to have a relationship with each
dog. This often requires working individually to gain control. This
usually begins by getting the appropriate relationship with the most
assertive dog.
I have cats, can
I make my dog get along with them?
Some dogs will form
a relationship with cats, some will tolerate cats, and some will kill
cats if they have a chance. It is important to monitor cat/dog
situations carefully. Sometimes training and management strategies can
help with dog/cat relationships.
I am
expecting a baby, what should I do to prepare?
This is a very
critical time for your dog. Advance preparation of the dog can make or
break the situation. It is not something to be taken lightly. There
are several good books on the subject. We suggest reading or talking
to a trainer to get specific help.
